Winter swimming - why you should brace the cold head on

Happy woman lap swimming with a kickboard

As the days of sunny blue skies and warm nights start to dwindle, often so does our swim routine.

Can you believe we are already entering the second month of winter already? As we start to head into the thick of the cooler and wetter weather, it is often our instinct to pack away our swimsuits and goggles until the summer months return.

This winter make a change and don't let the cooler weather steal your motivation by continuing to swim! Start off small and try sticking with your routine and start noticing the benefits! Some of the many benefits of maintaining your swim routine during winter include the following.

Maintained fitness

It is definitely no secret that swimming is great for overall fitness, no matter if you are a competitive or casual lap swimmer – the benefits for your health are endless! Continuing your lap swimming routine through the winter months will work on maintaining your overall fitness levels and ensure your technique and abilities don’t regress during a long break. Before you know it the sunshine and warm weather will be back with vengeance and there will be no need for you to pick up from where you left off – just need to continue smashing those swim goals!

Off peak period

With the major swim events including the Rottnest and Port to Pub swims having been ticked off the calendar for the year, you will often notice the pool rush dramatically fades away. This makes finding a whole lane to yourself a regular occurrence and not only gives you more space to focus freely on technique but a time to relax and reflect on your thoughts.

Indoor pool facilities

The beauty of indoor aquatic facilities is that you won’t even notice the cold weather when swimming with temperatures staying at a toasty 26 -30 degrees year round. Indoor pools also help to block out the chilly winter wind, so you aren’t caught in the chill when hopping out of the pool and making your way to the change rooms. Speaking of change rooms – access to hot showering and changing facilities will make the post-swim routine pleasant and seamless.

Positive state of mind

As the winter weather can often be a motivation dampener, heading to the pools is actually a great way to relax and improve your state of mind. Taking a moment to really focus solely on your breathing is a very effective meditation exercise and can set or end your day on a positive and relaxing note. In comparison to other exercises, swimming is awesome as it gives you the opportunity to get away from the temptations of your phone, whether that be work emails or phone calls and devote your undivided attention to your workout.

Less injury prone

Whether you are saving yourself for an important and intense summer season of sports, recovering from an injury or enjoy the gentleness of the water, swimming during winter is a great way to give your joints a much-needed break. As swimming is a low-impact exercise the water helps to reduce joint pain and can improve bone health overtime, all while staying active and fitting in your daily exercise.
