As the weather cools, many families start to rethink their child’s swimming lessons.

It’s common to wonder whether it’s time to pause—especially if your child has reached a certain level, seems to have plateaued, or isn’t enjoying lessons as much as they once did.

But being able to swim a little doesn’t always mean being water safe.

Why Children Stop Swimming Too Early

National research shows many children stop formal swimming lessons around the age of eight. Common reasons include busy schedules, cost and logistics, or parents feeling their child is already “good enough.”

At the same time, studies show a decline in children’s swimming ability across Australia. Many children are unable to swim 50 metres continuously—the national benchmark expected of 12‑year‑olds. This gap between perceived ability and actual skill can create a false sense of confidence around water safety.

Parents Often Overestimate Swimming Ability

Research in Australia and overseas shows that parents and carers often overestimate their child’s swimming skills. In one study, most children described as “okay”, “good” or even “excellent” swimmers couldn’t swim 50 metres without stopping.

This highlights how difficult it can be to accurately assess swimming ability—especially when programs, levels and benchmarks vary between providers.

What Being Water Safe Really Means

National water safety benchmarks help clarify what children should be working towards. By age 12, this includes the ability to:

  • Swim 50 metres continuously
  • Float for two minutes
  • Demonstrate basic survival and rescue skills
  • Show water safety knowledge and confidence

These skills take time, consistency and regular practice to develop.

Why Continuing Swimming at Arena Joondalup Matter

At Arena Joondalup Swim School, we focus on long‑term development—not just short‑term milestones. Ongoing lessons help children:

  • Retain and strengthen essential safety skills
  • Build endurance, coordination and technique
  • Develop confidence through consistent progression
  • Stay engaged in swimming year‑round, regardless of the weather

Our instructors support swimmers to progress when they’re ready, helping them build skills that last.

A Life Skill Worth Sticking With

In Western Australia, swimming is more than just an activity—it’s a vital life skill. Continuing swim lessons at Arena Joondalup gives your child the best chance to stay safe, confident and progressing in the water.

Because when it comes to swimming, consistency really does make the difference.
